Marsh
- Like the Duncan externally and internally,
the flesh of the Marsh variety is firm and has a high
juice content. During recent years, the Marsh has
almost completely replaced the Duncan largely due
to its ability to remain on the tree for significantly
longer thus, prolonging the harvest period. The Marsh
white grapefruit is highly desirable for processing
due to the attractive balance between sweetness and
acidity, and the segment stability that is characteristic
of the variety.

Duncan
-
Larger and slightly more resistant than the Marsh, the flesh of the Duncan white grapefruit is typically firm, with high juice content. Though primarily grown in Florida, Israel, Cuba, Mexico and South Africa also produce large quantities.

Star
Ruby - The Star Ruby is currently the most
deeply pigmented variety of grapefruit commercially
available and is widely considered to be the best
pigmented variety available. Both the interior and
exterior of the fruit are strongly coloured, and the
desirability of the fruit is increased by the high
sugar and juice content of the flesh. Despite the
attractive characteristics of the fruit, the production
of the variety Star Ruby is still relatively small
in comparison with other varieties due to the sensitivity
of the tree to disease and climatic changes.

Rio
Red - Later maturing and slightly lighter
in colour than the Star Ruby variety the Rio Red is
considered attractive due to the soft and exceptionally
juicy nature of the flesh and the lack of seeds (normally
1-3) as well as an intense interior colour that is
surpassed only by Star Ruby. Producers devote more
of their production to Rio Red than Star Ruby due
to the increased ability to withstand disease and
adverse weather conditions.

Ruby
Red - In terms of fruit characteristics,
the Ruby Red is extremely similar to the Marsh variety
and is desirable due to the low number of seeds in
each fruit. Despite new varieties, Ruby Red continues
to be the most well-recognised variety worldwide.

Ray
Ruby - Almost identical to the Ruby Red variety,
the Ray Ruby has a more intense blush and internal
colour, though these difference do not become apparent
until mid season. Due to these factors and a higher
sugar (brix) content, Ray Ruby is considered superior
to Ruby Red and the juice is more attractive.

Flame
- This variety is attractive due to its capacity to remain on the tree without deteriorating significantly. Aesthetically, the Flame grapefruit is perhaps the most impressive of the pigmented varieties, being almost uniformly round, with strong exterior blushing that is almost equal to Rio Red and Star ruby and an intense internal colour. As with other desirable pigmented varieties, Flame grapefruit typically has high juice content.
